‘Vocabulary’
Knavery (noun)
Meaning: a playful or mischievous act intended as a joke (धूर्तता)
Synonyms: roguery, waggery, frolic
Sentence: Knavery may serve for a turn, but honesty is in the long run.
Caprice (noun)
Meaning: a sudden and unaccountable change of mood or behavior. (अप्रत्याशित परिवर्तन)
Synonyms: whim, vagary, fancy
Sentence: An out-of-character caprice led him to take the day off from work and go to the beach.
Asseveration (noun)
Meaning: the solemn or emphatic declaration or statement of something. (दृढ़ वचन)
Synonyms: affirmation, assertion, avouchment
Antonyms: disavowal, contradiction, denial
Sentence: You can forget the asseveration of the past but want to remember your own sincerely.
Residuum (noun)
Meaning: a substance or thing that remains or is left behind (बाक़ी)
Synonyms: leftovers, remainder, remains
Antonyms: body, bulk
Sentence: Even highly decaffeinated coffee contains a tiny residuum of caffeine.
Countenancing (verb)
Meaning: admit as acceptable or possible. (स्वीकार करना)
Synonyms: tolerate, permit, allow
Antonyms: disapproving (of), discountenancing, disfavoring
Sentence: I don’t countenance such behavior in children of any age
Seething (adj.)
Meaning: filled with or characterized by intense but unexpressed anger. (क्रोध में)
Synonyms: blazing, raging, rankling
Antonyms: cool, calmness
Sentence: He marched off, seething with frustration.
Supine (adj.)
Meaning: lacking the ability or will to act on one’s own (कमज़ोर)
Synonyms: weak, feeble, yielding
Antonyms: powerful, puissant, strong
Sentence: They blamed the disaster on supine politicians who allowed large corporations to flout regulations.
Mercenary (adj.)
Meaning: having or marked by an eager and often selfish desire, especially for material possessions (लालच)
Synonyms: greedy, avaricious, acquisitive
Antonyms: altruistic, charitable, liberal
Sentence: She’s interested in him for purely mercenary reasons.
Gratis (adv.)
Meaning: without charge; free. (निःशुल्क)
Synonyms: free, without charge, for nothing
Antonyms: paid, costly
Sentence: I’ll give it to you, gratis!
Veneer (noun)
Meaning: a deceptively attractive external appearance (दिखावा)
Synonyms: facade, gloss
Sentence: The veneer of civility that the neighbors had maintained over the years disappeared with the filing of the first lawsuit.
